All You Need To Know About My Self Care Routine
I’m all about self-care. I’ve been about self-care for a long time now. Self-care means a lot of different things to me but the effect of it is always the same. I’m a little less grumpy, a little less tense and a lot nicer to be around.
And now that I have two little love bugs who pay attention to everything I do, it matters a lot more how I take care of myself.
I, like many of you out there, have struggled with depression and anxiety for the majority of my life. And I can remember times when I felt like I was drowning in the numbness or burned out from my mind running on overdrive. It took me a long time to figure out what I need to keep myself even. But once I did, it was life changing! That’s not to say, I don’t still struggle with feelings of depression or bouts of anxiety but I am much better equipped to handle them. They don’t hijack my life anymore.
So here are some of the things that are crucial to my self-care -
1. My sweet, sweet husband
He is the only person who can calm me down with a wink or make me smile by pretending to be dead when I walk in a room. My husband is also very in tune with my emotions. He’s either extra sensitive or I’m just bad at hiding my emotions. He knows when I’m even just slightly upset and is always willing to help me get out of my funk.
2. Prayer + My Scriptures
This one is huge for me! I learned a couple of years ago that talking to my Heavenly Father immediately calms me down. Maybe it’s the act of talking and thinking through my problems. Maybe it’s knowing that my troubles, anxieties, and heartaches can be comforted by Him. As you probably know, I’m a lover of words and reading my scriptures helps me to re-calibrate. It helps to remind me of what I need to be focusing on, worrying about and what’s really at stake. Sometimes, a quick 5 minutes of reading can help me let go of whatever I’m worried about.
3. The Office
No, I’m not talking about going to work. I’m talking about the beloved TV show. I’m not sure why this show almost instantly cheers me up, even the Scott’s Tots episode could do it. It never fails to make me laugh and the familiarity of the characters brings me comfort. Some of you might think I’m crazy but I’m sure you have a favorite song, TV show or movie that perks you right up! If not - find one! Something you can relax to and something that brings out a smile in you.
4. Being Around People I Love
Being alone has never helped me feel better. The other day, I came home from work in a crappy mood. I really just wanted Chick-Fil-A and to go to Ross but my husband decided to stay home. So I changed my mind and changed into sweatpants. Why? While buying a cute new dress would make me feel a little bit better, I know myself well enough to know that being alone with my anxiety-riddled brain would not. My sweet husband ended up changing his mind and going with me and I had a much better evening than I thought I would!
Last but not least, reading is a tried-and-true fail safe of mine. Reading is a quick escape into another world that contains many different problems than mine. This is usually done best with an ice cold Diet Coke and a fuzzy blanket while my husband watches a documentary on Netflix.
